Amyclae Dance Academy
A good dancer is not determined by the number of steps they know how to perform but by how well they perform the steps they know.

top
The competition team program can only be beneficial to the students if each member can commit their time and energy to it. Any school activity, club or organization requires a certain amount of commitment just like the competition team does. This program also requires the parents’ time and commitment as well.
Children have many different interests. If they have several activities that they are equally talented in, eventually they will have to decide which activity they want to pursue in order to give 100% and reach their fullest potential. Discipline, dedication and determination are the focus for any activity a student wants to excel in. The competition program is for the student that has these qualities and wants to incorporate them in a performance environment.

Auditions  top
Students ages 9 yrs old and up are eligible to audition for the competition team. The parent/student must fill out a competition team contract and pay competition fees before being allowed to audition. The competition fees will only be refunded if the student is not chosen as a competition team member.

During auditions, the students will be evaluated on
  • Technique
  • Stage presence
  • Ability to pick up choreography
  • Overall performance
Understudies will also be chosen at this time.
Understudies  top
Understudies ARE on the competition team. Understudies play a VERY important role on the team. They must know all of their teammates spots and formation changes in the event that one of their teammates can not perform. They may have to jump in at a moments notice. In this case, the understudy will not pay competition fees.

Understudies are required to attend the same classes, performances, and must follow the same attendance policy. Understudies are re-evaluated in Nov-Dec for placement in the competition team dances. If understudies are placed in the dances they will be required to pay the competition fees. The competition fees that were paid at auditions will be returned to the parent until this time. Understudies will need to purchase costumes since they WILL be performing in the competition dances at recital.

Solos, Duos & Trios  top
Students MUST be a member of the competition team in order to perform a solo, duo or trio. Interested students will choreograph and perform a 30 second audition piece at team auditions. Based on studio and teacher availability, a limited number of students will be selected to perform a solo, duo or trio. These dances will be performed at all 3 competitions and at local events if time permits. Additional costs for choreography, private classes, competition fees and costumes will apply. Please see the office staff for more information.

Competition Fees  top
Competition Fees are $220 a year and due at auditions before choreography begins. This fee is for the student to perform 2 dances at 3 Regional Competitions chosen by the Director. The competition fee is non-refundable if a student makes the team and does not include food, hotel or travel expenses that may be incurred. Students may be chosen to do additional group dances. The competition fee will be an additional $110 for each dance they are chosen to perform.

Attendance Policy  top
It is extremely important that dancers have regular attendance in weekly and rehearsal classes. If the team Director feels that a student is falling behind due to absences then the parents and student will be notified. If the absences continue then the student will be dismissed from the team.

Etiquette & Conduct  top
Students and parents are required to show respect to ADA instructors, office staff, and other students/parents at the studio and at performances. This includes students and parents from other schools. Misconduct will result in immediate dismissal from the team. The ADA competition team members and parents should set the standards and be role models for others to follow.

Competitions & Local Events  top
Competition Team members will be required to attend all competitions, awards ceremonies and local events scheduled by the Director. Local events consist of parades, fundraising activities and benefit shows. All activities will be scheduled over the weekends. If a student is already involved in several activities that may prevent them from being at every event then they should reconsider committing themselves to the competition team.

Workshops  top
The competition team is required to attend 1 workshop a year chosen by the Director. The fees range from $165-$240 for a 2 day intensive workshop lasting 5-9 hours a day. Food, hotel and travel expenses are not included. Workshops give students the opportunity to work with professional teachers as well as learn different styles of dance. Students will enjoy taking classes with their peers who share the same love and passion for dance as they do.

Dance Camp  top
Dance Camp is when the students learn the choreography for their competition dances. The dance camp is in August and it is mandatory for all competition team members. Please be aware of the dance camp dates before auditioning to make sure you will be able to attend. Additional fees apply.

Warm-Ups & Costumes  top
All competition members are required to purchase a competition team warm-up. These warm-ups will be worn at all team events. The warm-up fee is $80-$125. Additional accessories such as duffel bags, garment bags, shirts and shorts can also be purchased for an additional cost. The Director has the right to require a particular leotard, shirt or shorts to be wore at team events. This will be an additional cost.

The costume fee is $60-$80 per dance. The total costume fee is $120-$160 for both dances. This fee along with the warm-up fee will be due in October. All costumes must be properly maintained. Any rips, tears or alterations must be taken care of by the student/parent prior to a performance. A required make-up and accessories list will be given to each student before the first performance.
